Award-Winning Online Courses Available for Veterans and Servicemembers
Posted July 14, 2014
Recognizing the growing interest among Veterans and Servicemembers in confidential access to digital health resources, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) developed two interactive training courses: Moving Forward: Overcoming Life’s Challenges and Parenting for Service Members and Veterans. These award-winning courses focus on providing Veterans and Servicemembers with free, confidential, easy-to-access information and resources.
Moving Forward teaches problem-solving skills to help Veterans and Servicemembers understand their personal decision-making strengths and weaknesses, identify goals, and formulate plans to confidently face obstacles. The interactive games and quizzes help users learn ways to improve their current problem-solving habits, increase optimism and reduce stress and anxiety. In addition, the course provides users with a collaborative and engaging experience that includes video stories about how others handle stressful situations like divorce, the death of a family member, unemployment, and balancing too many commitments. Moving Forward was selected as a Silver Award winner in the 16th annual Web Health Awards program; Silver Award winner in the 2014 OMNI Intermedia Award in both Government and Educational Categories; and winner of the Innovative Award in the 2014 Federal Government Distance Learning Association (FGDLA) Annual Awards.
This course helps parents learn how to address both everyday parenting challenges as well family issues unique to military families. This course helps busy Veteran and Military parents learn how to interact with their children in new ways, and reinforces the good habits they already have. The course also provides tools and resources to help them improve their parenting skills, build closer relationships with their children, and reconnect with their families after deployment. Each of the six modules addresses a different challenge parents may face, including helping children with difficult emotions and behaviors, positive approaches to discipline, and parenting with emotional and/or physical challenges. Parenting was selected as a Silver Award winner in the 16th annual Web Health Awards program; Gold Award winner in the 2014 OMNI Intermedia Award in both Government and Educational Categories; and winner of the Innovative Award in the 2014 Federal Government Distance Learning Association (FGDLA) Annual Awards.
Both courses are free, self-paced and available online. Users can access these courses anytime, anywhere. These courses also have companion mobile phone apps, Moving Forward and Parenting2Go. These apps are available for download on iTunes and can be used alone or with the more comprehensive online tool. While the courses were designed specifically for Veterans and Servicemembers, they can be helpful to anyone facing stressful problems or parenting challenges.
